Designers offer improved 3-D glasses

Forget the old cardboard frames with red and blue lenses.

During this movie season, many movie fans will enjoy state-of-the-art 3-D films such as "Hugo" and "The Adventures of Tintin" in theaters or watch 3-D videos such as "Avatar" on big-screen TVs. And now, cool glasses can complete the experience.

Some of the newest TV monitors, like movie theaters, use a polarizing technology rather than color-coded images to produce a 3-D effect. Thus the same plastic glasses you use at the multiplex can work with the latest 3-D-enabled TVs.

But why settle for handouts? Those shrink-wrapped glasses that you get free at the theater may be sanitized for your protection, but they don't stand out from the crowd. So several manufacturers and movie studios are encouraging people to buy better glasses for permanent use.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, whose Dreamworks Animation Studios creates all of its 'toons in 3-D, has been Hollywood's loudest cheerleader for improved glasses. At his urging, eyeglass manufacturer Oakley spent two years developing wrap-around 3-D glasses that provide better optics and a wider field of vision than the standard flat glasses that are distributed at theaters.
