5 DIY Cleaners That Save Cash
The main ingredientsMost homemade household products contain the same ingredients. The first – and probably most obvious – is soap, which you can purchase in bars, liquids or flakes for less than $3. Soap itself is completely biodegradable and nontoxic. But when choosing your soap, opt for brands without synthetic scents, colors or other additives for the most eco-friendly results.
Once soap is dissolved in water, adding common kitchen ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice and salt is usually enough to get things clean. But for added power, some recipes use powdered wash soda (also known as sodium carbonate) and borax (also known as sodium tetraborate). Both ingredients are mineral-based and available in the laundry section of most grocery stores for about $4.
1. Laundry detergentStore-bought detergents can cost up to $10 for 32 loads, which can really add up over time. But it’s easy to get the same fresh-smelling clothes the all-natural way for less than half the price.
out of the bag: five will make you feel alright*
I don't do so well with contacts, plus I like the way I look with glasses - all smart and serious. These are my favourite pair of all the ones I've ever had - handmade in Japan, nice and weighty but really comfortable, and I love the wood-like finish on the sides. The cleaning cloth is a souvenir from the Prado in Spain - it's a detail of a painting by Mariano Fortuny called This is a gift from my friends for my birthday last year after my last watch stopped. Just like that. Six months after it was serviced. I was grateful for my friends' good timing (pun!), but I was a little "hmm" by the metal strap since I prefer leather. Now I fully appreciate how nicely the mesh bracelet sits on my wrist without moving and the way it looks like a nice cuff - the only jewellery I wear. Feeling a bit like I'm betraying it for wanting to buy a watch! My five essentials would probably be my Nokia E63 (email/web/phone/planner in one), my favourite pair of shoes (currently gray distressed Belstaff boots) a handbag (currently a chestnut distressed leather bag from Belen Echandia), a book (currently reading short stories by Nabokov) and my Tom Ford sunglasses - indispensable against the Indian sun.
